From about October all the way through to February a day won't go by without me being asked by a customer how they can keep warm on their bike. The trouble is that there are loads of answers depending on your individual circumstances, but if you get the basics right, a well layered jacket, some warm gloves and good underwear then you're off to a fighting start.
The hands are the main area that people suffer with and this is hardly surprising as they are the most exposed and have less blood flowing through the fingers than pretty much any other part of the body. Add to that the fact that you're probably resting them on a pair of frozen metal rods and it's now wonder you're feeling the cold.
There are a lot of very good heated products on the market, such as EXO2 heated gloves and Oxford heated grips, both of which I'd recommend if you're journey takes much longer than half an hour.
Personally I use neither of these for my 15 mile ride into town every day. I own a good thick pair of Teknic thunder gloves and for me the best all round bolt on for to keep out the chills is a set of handlebar muffs.
I'm always amazed at the looks of revulsion I get when I suggest people put these on their bike as an economic and affective way of making their life bearable.
Have a look at the couriers who are out there all day every day. It's rare you'll see one without some form of protection on his or her bars. In fact because of the nature of their work some will have fingerless gloves on under those muffs so that they can get the best from their heated grips.
The science is very simple, if you'd like a break down click here and see the numbers for yourself. Basically with muffs on you're hands are sitting in still air, so at 50mph your hands are being attacked by O tempratures instead of minus 31!
I fitted a pair of Tucano Urbano neoprene muffs to my faithful Honda last year and frankly they've been brilliant. Smaller and much less conspicuous than the old school ones these stay rigid up to about 80 mph. After that they push back a little on the levers but not enough to affect performance. Tucano recomend that for regular high speed journeys you should fit their bigger and more rigid muffs stressing that the neoprene models are primarily designed for urban use. Muffs also help keep your gloves dry when the weather is at it's worst and on a recent soaking wet trip down to Dover from London and back I can confirm that they worked just fine.
My only gripe is that you have to manipulate the switchgear through the neoprene and this can be a bit awkward with thick gloves on. Still it's a small hassle for the benfits these give. I managed to make it into work on every miserable winters day with no real problems at all. For me these truly are essential winter kit.
