Helmets come in different shapes and sizes and as the only compulsory piece of motorcycle wear it’s important to get the one that’s right for you, that’s why it’s important to have a wide range to try on.
All of our staff are trained to correctly fit crash helmets, and some have the added benefit of factory training which qualifies them to custom fit some model of helmets.
Every motorcycle crash helmet we sell has to comply with the ECE2205 standard, and will be marked accordingly with a sticker on the outer shell, and a label sewn onto the fastening strap. We do not sell non approved helmets.
Helmet fitting advice: When you try a helmet on what you want is one that’s as firm as possible without being uncomfortable. It should be touching as much of your head as possible with no pressure points or ‘high’ points that may compromise you wearing it for an extended period of time. At Infinity we encourage people to leave a helmet on in the shop for as long as possible to establish its suitability. Make sure that you can see adequately out of the helmet, there should be no blind spots which could compromise your safety. You shouldn’t be able to move the helmet too far about on your head; it should feel as if it’s gripping your head, firmly, but not tightly. Our staff will make sure it’s not moving about too much on your head, it should move with you. Different helmets will fit different shapes of heads in different ways.
Types of helmet: There are three main different types of helmet on the market, open face helmets, full face helmets and flip front helmets and at Infinity we offer a choice of models in each type from respected manufacturer’s such as Arai, Shoei, Caberg, Scorpion EXO, HJC and Schuberth.
Open face helmets are quite basic and offer the minimum amount of protection. They’re popular with scooter riders, cruiser riders’ and anyone who feels a bit claustrophobic in a full face model. They have the additional bonus of great peripheral vision, and if you’re lucky you won’t have to take yours off when you go to pay for your petrol!
Full face helmets offer the greatest level of protection and are the most popular choice amongst motorcyclists. There a wide range of models on the market which have a lot of different features, and they all fit differently, that’s why we encourage personal shopping for them.
The third, and increasingly popular option if the flip front helmet. Sometimes called modular helmets or concept helmets these offer the best of both worlds with the protection and security of a full face and the petrol attendant friendly option of lifting the chin bar to show off your features to the world. Most of the flip front models we sell are tested and approved as a full face helmet, there are however several models that have been tested as an open face helmet as well. Whilst it is an offence to ride with a non-approved helmet in the open position it is very unlikely that you will ever get pulled over for it.
Helmets are constructed from a variety of materials, the two most common for the outer shell being fiberglass and polycarbonate.
The main advantage of polycarbonate is cost and ease of production, the main advantage of fiberglass is weight and shell strength. All of our staff can discuss the pros and cons with you of each type of helmet.
The better fitting a helmet is the quieter it will be, if noise is a concern to you then it’s well worth looking at the Schuberth C3 and Schuberth SR1. These have been designed to be the quietest helmets on the market and numerous independent tests have born this attention to detail out.
There are many different models in each manufacturer’s range all of which have slightly different features. Right at top end from respected manufacturers such as Arai and Shoei are their racing models, the Shoei X-Spirit 2 and the Arai RX7 GP. These helmets have an amazing degree of ventilation and are popular with track day riders and road riders who want the ultimate helmet. Both of these models are available in racer replicas as they are the same helmets worn by many top riders in MotoGP and Superbikes.
Below them in each range is the Shoei XR1100 and the Arai Quantum. Also at this level is the HJC RPHA-10, as worn by Ben Spies. These helmets offer good ventilation, a lot of comfort and with the Arai and Shoei models they can be custom fitted to your head. Below these models in the range are the Shoei Qwest and the Arai Chaser. What these helmets lack in features when compared to their higher spec’ cousins they don’t lose out in quality. In a similar vein The Arai Axcess ‘entry level Arai’ has a lot to offer and is a cheap Arai for those who want the quality and comfort that the brand has to offer but without all of the added features of the higher spec’ models.
Shoei also produce a flip front helmet, the multitec which is rated as one of the safest and most comfortable flip front lids. The versatile multitec is a popular choice among professional riders, in fact we are pleased to supply to the majority of London Ambulance riders with their white multitecs. Arai don’t produce a flip front helmet.
Our biggest selling flip front helmet is the Caberg Konda This model offers a lot of features, such as a drop down sun visor, a removable washable lining, and a variety of colours which considering its price means it is one of our best value for money helmets. With a similar range of features and the added bonus of extensive wind tunnel testing behind it the super quiet Schuberth C3 is also a popular model.
HJC helmets are the most popular in the world and this Korean brand has earned itself a reputation for value and quality that is second to none. In fact they produce a range of Harley Davidson branded helmets for the popular American manufacturer.
A relative newcomer to the market who are rapidly making inroads are the American Scorpion helmets. Again they offer a high level of features and some very unique styling features that are rapidly making them very popular.
