A collaboration of Barry Sheene and Dainese brought the back protector in the 80’s. This protection is essential for your safety when riding a motorcycle. Whether you are racing or on the street, your spine needs protection. Like a helmet, a back protector absorbs energy from an impact, helping to prevent damage to the spine and ribs as well as to internal organs such as the kidneys, liver and spleen, which can all be harmed by a heavy external blow. Unfortunately a back protector will not prevent injuries to twisted or bent spines as most believe, but it will make it less likely for you to sustain minor injuries and at the end of the day a spine protector could improve your quality of life after an accident.
Fit and comfort are both essential when choosing a back protector as discomfort can be a dangerous distraction. Take your time when choosing a back protector and make sure it is the correct size for your back. If too small, it will not give the full protection you need.
It is a legal requirement for body armour to be CE tested and approved if it is going to be claimed as protective, this can be found on the actual protector.
