Bungee Cords are simple elastic cords have been a mainstay of motorcycling since their invention in the fifties. It didn’t take long for people to realise that these simple bungee cords were the answer to strapping gear to the back of bikes as their strength and flexibility meant they suited every application.
These days there are any number variations on the bungee cord theme and most good shops will be able to offer you a selection of bungee cords to choose from. Length is obviously a main priority when choosing a suitable bungee cord, too short and it may not stretch far enough, too long and they’ll be excess amounts to strap away. Most people find the answer lies in carrying several different bungee cords around to cover all occasions.
Wide flat bungee cords don’t tend to cut into the stuff you’re carrying, but can be hard to route under a mounting point. Thin bungee cords tend to cut into items and also lose their elasticity quite quickly. Some bungee cords will have metal ends and can be shaped to fit a wider variety of mounting points. Other bungee cords may have a flat plastic mounting hook which is safer but may not hook in as well as the metal.
Whatever you choose beware the cheap bungee cords. That cluster of bungee cords in pound shops may look like good value but after they’ve failed in transit and you’re wandering along the A543 looking for your lost bag they won’t seem like such good value.
