The classic way of carrying luggage on a bike, motorbike panniers have evolved over the years to become stylish and functional with a range of previously unheard of features. Originally made of leather, the design derived from the saddle bags so beloved of horse riders over the ages.
These days’ motorbike panniers in leather are relatively rare and tend to be used more as a styling accessory rather than as a functional luggage item. Even the classic cruisers such as Harley and Victory produce a practical range of hard luggage to compliment their machines.
Hard motorbike pannier luggage is the way to go if you want something that’s used all the time and you need to carry a load of stuff about. The drawback is that they increase the width of your bike quite dramatically and they require the fitting of bespoke bars. A reasonable quality set such as Kappa will cost around £400 depending on box size.
For the more casual user a set of throwover bags is more practical. Quality items such as the famed Oxford Products lifetime range (so called because of their guarantee) are a universal fit and come with all manner of bungee cords and straps to ensure a safe and secure fit to any machine.
Motorbike panniers are made of very durable material, including heat resistant material on the base, to ensure long lasting performance. They have features such as expandable sections to give greater capacity, waterproof zips and multiple pockets.
Most good shops will let you take the motorbike panniers out to your motorbike so that you can get an idea of how they’ll fit before you buy.
