Mens motorcycle gloves come in all sorts of shapes and sizes in order to accommodate the wide range of applications that they need to cater for. They can be short, long, waterproof, vented, leather, textile and armoured to an almost frightening degree. After your crash helmet it’s generally accepted that motorcycle gloves are the next most important piece of gear you need to buy. The first question you need to ask yourself is what sort of riding do I want the motorcycle glove for? Your needs are very different depending on the type of bike, type of weather and even the type of road you plan on tackling. Most riders will have at least two pairs of motorcycle gloves as the hands are very vulnerable to temperature changes as well as generally being the first thing to hit the ground when it goes wrong. Without going into the myriad categories available, let’s just split mens motorcycle gloves into two easy types, waterproof and non waterproof. Waterproof motorcycle gloves are what most people wear in the winter as they are warmer than non waterproof ones due to the membrane in them to keep your hands dry. The nature of this liner is that it also offers a degree of wind protection as well. Serious winter motorcycle gloves will tend to have many (up to twelve) layers all of which are designed to keep you warm and dry. Naturally they will be quite bulky, but these layers do settle down quite quickly on the fingertips which makes them less cumbersome to use. You can buy pretty basic waterproof mens motorcycle gloves for around £20. At this level you will be getting a basic item with cheap, sometimes plastic membranes which will keep you dry, but also give you very clammy hands which in turn will make you feel cold. Summer orientated waterproof mens motorcycle gloves will be a lot thinner, the thinnest being ones which are manufactured using a WL Gore patented process called xtrafit. This allows the most feel from a waterproof motorcycle glove. They don’t tend to be very warm and so are generally considered a summer item. As the manufacturing process is very labour intensive these mens motorcycle gloves are quite expensive. Non waterproof mens motorcycle gloves range from the very basic £15 ones popular with summer commuters and trials riders through to high tech carbon fibre and titanium blends that can retail for over £200. These gloves tend to offer better "feel" at the controls as there asre as few layers as possible between your hands and the motorcycle controls. Whatever type of mens motorcycle glove you’re looking for it’s best to find somewhere with a good selection of at least 20 different types to try and put some on your hands. Whoever came up with the phrase ‘fits like a glove’ was someone who has never really worn any as finger thickness and length play a critical part in choice and everyone is that little bit different. It’s also a good idea to try the motorcycle gloves on your bike to make sure you can play with switchgear unhindered.
