A properly maintained motorcycle chain lasts longer, improves fuel economy and lets your bike transfer all the power it can to the rear wheel, so take 5 minutes now and again and treat your motorcycle to some motorcycle chain lube. Most manufacturers suggest checking/adjusting/lubing your motorcycle chain every 300 miles or so, but with a baffling choice of motorcycle chain lube brands, where do you start? With a clean motorcycle chain is probably best – there are cleaners and brushes which can clean off the old lube and any dirt or grit stuck to it. Once clean, reapply motorcycle chain lube, taking care to get into the gaps between the chain links. Most bikes of 250cc and above use an O-Ring chain, where tiny O-Rings seal lubricant applied at the factory into the chain, so if your bike has this type of chain, make sure your motorcycle chain lube is O-Ring compatible, otherwise the seals will be damaged.
There are basically two types of motorcycle chain lube, traditional lubes and waxes, which are designed to coat the chain and fling off when the chain gets dirty, relying on the sealed in lube.
It’s always best to lube the motorcycle chain when you come in from a ride; the heat will help the solvent evaporate, rather than before a ride, when the solvent will help the motorcycle chain lube cover your back wheel. Check your chain adjustment after using motorcycle chain lube, not before, since the lube might free off any sticking links.
