In terms of portability, motorcycle chains are the bottom of the list. However, for serious security, a quality motorcycle chain and lock, accompanied by a secondary lock, takes some beating. With prices from £30 up to £300 there is something for most pockets, but think about it this way; most people have an insurance excess of around £250 up; add that to the hassle and inconvenience, as well as the money a no claims bonus saves, and you can quickly justify buying some decent security for your pride and joy, or your ride-to-work hack. Often it’s the motorcycle you’d least expect to get stolen that do, kids stealing bikes to race up and down canal tow paths are more likely to take a motorcycle without modern electronics or an immobiliser.
If you frequently leave your motorcycle in the same place, we recommend using a motorcycle chain and lock to secure the motorcycle to something immovable – like a ground anchor or anything that is less likely to be sawn through than the chain itself. We also stock motorcycle chain carry packs, so you can take your lock with you if need be.
Something of a half way house between a U-Lock and a chain and padlock, a motorcycle cable lock is more portable than a motorcycle chain and can be used to attach your motorcycle to a bigger variety of street furniture than a U-lock. Compared to a bicycle lock, a motorcycle cable lock is generally thicker, made of stronger material, and uses a much stronger lock mechanism.
Security needn’t be compromised; the Abus motorcycle cable lock range includes locks approved by Sold Secure. Motorcycle Cable locks can be used to stop your motorcycle being wheeled away in the same way as a disc lock, but can also be used to attach your motorcycle to something immovable, or to lock your helmet to your motorcycle, so if you have space under your seat or in your top box, a motorcycle cable lock might be the best means of security for your motorcycle.
