Expert advice and a few gear recommendations from the manager of our GPS store, Henry Simons
Henry is the manager of Infinity Motorcycles’ Great Portland Street store, located right in the heart of London. Commuting over 80 miles each day on his Yamaha Tracer 700, Henry needs kit he can rely on and keep him comfortable whilst dicing through heavy city traffic. This article is a first in our new series "The Wear Bar" where we take a look at what our staff are wearing…
We'd like to point out that some of the kit Henry wears is no longer available either due to it being recently superceded by a new model or the stock has been delayed due to the global shipping delays. In these cases we have listed alternatives at the bottom of each section.
On his head, Henry chose an unconventional helmet for the task at hand, the Shoei X-Spirit 3 fitted with a photochromatic visor:
“Absolutely not the right helmet for the job, however, when it came around to buying a new helmet 4 years ago I fell in love with it and had to get it as it was, in my opinion, the coolest helmet in the shop! However, as this is due a replacement soon I am balancing up the Shoei GT Air 2 or the Arai Quantic - both great helmets for what I need! The photochromatic visor also makes this package an absolute dream for me, some would say overpriced and unnecessary - but as someone who hasn't had to change their visor over once in 4 years - I would argue otherwise! Saves having to stash a clear visor in my jacket or rush out the door in the morning and being blinded on my morning commute by the sun.”
Depending on the weather, Henry has a choice of two main outfits; the Bering Yukon Laminate Gore-Tex suit or the Knox Zephyr Jacket paired with Bull It Covert Jeans:
“I love to be comfortable on the bike so as often as I can I am wearing my armoured jeans and Knox jacket on the bike. The Knox Armoured Shirt range I cannot recommend enough, it is super easy to layer up with windproof/waterproof layers to match it up against most weather situations. Having taken it through everything from my daily commute, summer rides in 35+ degree heat or trips around North Wales and the rest of the UK I have put it through some decent mileage! However, when it comes to more adverse weather conditions you cannot beat a heavy duty Gore-Tex laminate suit, the Bering Yukon offers me exactly what I need for a long commute in stormy conditions and when riding through winter - plus a 5-year warranty to back it up - there’s nothing to complain about!”

You’ll find a pair of Alpinestars SMX 6 V2 Gore-Tex boots on his feet, or even TCX Street 3 WP if the weather is warmer:
“The Alpinestars are my go-to boots, with the amount of motorway miles I do, I feel safer in a longer boot option, plus the Gore-Tex keeps me dry all year and also breathes nicely so I don't end up with smelly boots at home. For shorter summer rides though, nothing beats a good set of armoured trainers!”
Protecting Henry’s hands are the Knox Nexos gloves in the summer but dons the Bering Timon Gore-Tex gloves for colder climes:
“My Knox gloves are a bit long in the tooth but nobody can argue with the protection they offer their customers, but mostly I love the fit and feel of them. The blend of cowhide and goat leather used makes them super tactile but also means they're nice and cool throughout the summer, especially with the ventilation points Knox add. The Bering gloves offer me that trustworthy hardwearing protection again with Gore-Tex and insulation making them a pretty perfect partner for the winter commute.”

To accessorise his outfit, Henry loves the technical stuff and can’t live without these 4 things:
“The Cardo Packtalk Edge is probably a bit over the top for what I need considering a mostly ride on my own - but being a bit of a tech guy I love having something as feature packed as the Packtalk. The JBL Speakers make for good company on my commute too, their sound quality is great and they are more than loud enough for me at motorway speeds.”
“Kriega R20 Backpack (with Harness Pocket attachment) - Is there even anything that needs to be said? 10-years warranty and the best chest harness system on the market makes this my go-to bag for everything - both on and off the bike. It’s the perfect size for a full day pack or a lightly packed weekend away. Plus with all of the accessories Kriega offer, you can get all sorts of handy attachments like the Harness Pocket which I use to make my phone and keys easy access whilst out on the bike.”
“Pinlock Ear Plugs - Everyone needs ear plugs, but these work using a filter so whilst cutting out majority of wind noise and harsher sounds, I can still hear my Cardo system, any emergency vehicle sirens, and conversation if chatting whilst I still have my helmet on.”
And finally, a word on the two wheeled wonder that takes him here, there, and everywhere - the Yamaha Tracer 700:
“All my riding is done on the Yamaha Tracer 700 - ideal for a regular commuter, offering more than enough power to cruise along the motorway and get myself out of trouble, but also a nimble enough frame to hold its own when filtering through heavy London traffic on my commute”
AND THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
