Helite Turtle High Viz Airbag Motorcycle Vest:
- Better force distribution
- Better energy absorption
- Bigger airbag protection area
- Better resistance against small obstacles
The Improvement is significant in respect of small sharp protruding objects, and parts of the Motorbike. A 130mm anvil is 4 times better absorbed, smaller, sharper objects are far better shielded than with just airbags alone. Additionally the big back protector surface on top of the airbag protects new areas of the back not previously covered by the existing model.
- The airbags protect a bigger surface because the back protector intercepts the obstacle on a large area and distribute the energy on the airbags.
- The airbag resists better because it is protected by the back protector.
Our Great Portland Street store has recently started stocking Helite airbag vests. Branch Manager and prolific crasher, Keith, has this to say about them.
There’s been a lot of talk in the last few years about airbag technology for motorcyclists. The first time it was really seen in public was as long ago as 2007 when Dainese supported rider Simone Giorgie crashed in practice for the Valencia Moto GP. Dainese had been working on this system for more than ten years and it has proved its worth on track many times since.
Approaching the issue from a different angle in 2001 was Frenchman Gérard Thevenot, (an entrepreneur in the light aircraft industry). He was more interested in developing airbag technology for the private individual, in the initial stages at least for ultralight pilots, but obviously the benefits for other sectors were obvious and the first motorcycle airbags were available in about 2005.
The technology has been slow to catch on with motorcyclists but since 2009 one group who have been embracing the technology whole heartedly is the Equestrian sector. If anybody has any doubts as to the effectiveness of the vest then speak to anyone who’s been saved by car air bags in the last 30 or so years!
These days you’ll find horseback riding airbag jackets used by military and police officers around the world as well as by hunt riders, polo players, professional jockeys and most Olympic competitors.
This French YouTube vid really shows how effective the airbag vest is and how the speed of deployment is all but instantaneous.
It works very simply. Basically it’s a quality vest (available in black or dayglo/reflective) which goes over your regular riding gear and is connected to your bike via a lanyard. Obviously the first question we get asked is; “what if I forget to disconnect the lanyard and step off of my bike?” The simple answer is, nothing. The mechanism has a 30KG breaking strain (66 lbs) and we can demonstrate to you in store how much that is, but basically it’s been designed to only go off when it needs to.
Once activated the airbag vest is fully inflated in less than a tenth of a second and ready to take the impact. I’ve personally tried the airbag vest (and if you’re seriously interested we can set it off on you in store) and instantly wished I’d been wearing it on any number of occasions in my 30 or so years of riding motorcycles. It gives substantial protection to your torso. Ribs, lungs, shoulders, back, neck, collarbones and anything else you care to name are all suddenly well covered and less vulnerable that they would otherwise be.
The other great thing with the Helite airbag system is that once deployed it can be completely and easily re-set by the individual by simply reloading it with a new cartridge. Some other systems need to be sent back to the manufacturers and re-set by them.
I know that there’ll be keyboard warriors claiming that if this happens then it won’t do that, and what if you do this, then this will occur and so on. It’s simple, tell us what type of accident you plan on having and we’ll sell you the best motorcycle clothing on the market for that accident!
Very rarely do you go sliding down the tarmac for more than a few metres in a road accident - that kind of thing happens mainly on track. Substantial hits are more common on the road, as are diesel induced slow speed high-sides.
Swapping between bikes (or saddles) is not difficult either. If you have more than one motorcycle (or saddle) all you need to do is purchase a separate lanyard to hook onto and away you go. That’s a lot easier (and cheaper) than equipping your bike with the sensors used by other systems As well as the vest there is a limited range of leather and textile jackets which incorporate Helite technology which are also available as special orders.
Whilst the Helite range may not boast the high-tech GPS data feed and super clever sensors of the Dainese system it does offer an amazingly high degree of protection combined with a simplicity and price that makes it accessible to everyone.
