I've been wearing Sidi race boots on the track for over twelve years now and despite numerous 'off's' I've not actually broken my feet or ankles whilst wearing them. And yes I know that's seriously tempting fate, but it's a fact.
It may be that I've been lucky but before then I'd managd to break both of my feet (the left one twice) in racing accidents, so I genuinely believe that these armoured hush puppies have stopped the damage on more than one occasion. In fact as I sit and write this I'm recovering from a fractured ankle sustained in bike crash whilst wearing another brand of boots.
I presently race in Sidi Vertigo corsas airs. These are now a few years old and have been superceded by the Sidi Vortice. The basic principles are pretty much the same with adjustable bits to make sure that the boot virtually clamps onto the foot and lower leg. They acheive this by a system of adjustable straps called the Techno system. This allows for a multitude of calf adjustment and also restricts foot movement across the bridge. The Vortice extends the concept a little further than the Corsas also has the neat feature of bolt in replaceable soles. The well tried vertebrae system helps prevent twisting injuries and the shock absorbing heel cup really works. The sliders are vented and made from a race legal metal. Mine have seen hundreds, if not thousands of track miles without a hitch and I really recommend them.
If you're on a budget look at the basic Sidi Vertigo. At £189.99 is £110 heaper than the Vortice and offers probably more protection than any other boot in its class. If you're after the ultimate all rounder then the £229.99 Vertigo mega-gore should tick the boxes. I personally reckon it's the ultimate waterproof sports boot and when you count up the features it's great value for money.
All the Infinity branches stock a good range of Sidi products and can order them in ladies sizes as well.
There are few names in motorcycle wear as well known to the average rider as that of Italian boot maker Sidi. Founded in 1960 they started as a small workshop producing mountain sports footwear and registered their first patent in 1966 for the first rear entry ski boot.
Now after half a decade, SIDIís unique balance of tradition and innovation, style and comfort, make SIDI sporting footwear exceptional in the industry. An area it got the jump in quite some time ago.
In the late 60ís the founder of the company Dino Signori, (who also gave his name to it, maybe itís surprising that itís not the Disi company!) looked at expanding the range and came up with the idea of producing motorcycle boots.
A long time bike fan he knew that there is more to life than trekking and skiing, so in 1969 Dino jumped into the biking industry in a big way, and aligned Sidi boots with Italy's legendary motorcycle hero, Giacomo Agostini. He was the first rider who helped Sidi advance road race footwear, a tradition that continues to this day with no fewer than a third of the Moto GP regulars turning up to play in the companyís ever evolving products.
Also in 1969, Dino signed up a very outgoing Belgian, and then current world MX champion world champion Joel Robert to wear his MX boots. For those not familiar with this colourful Belgian (and 6 times world champion) he was famous for not taking training very seriously. To the extent that at one event he stubbed out his cigarette on the handlebars of a competitor whilst they were on the start line!
The early 70's were obviously a productive time for this small company as it was around then that they produced their first cycling shoes. This is another area that they have innovated in over many years and their products are the choice of people such as three-time World Cycling Champion Oscar Freire. Today there are almost as many cycling shoes in their range as there are motorcycle boots for the road.
In subsequent years, the Sidi design team have created some of the most ground breaking designs in motorcycle footwear. Things we take for granted today such as velcro fasteners, the use of Lorica, inner laces, sole replacement systems, toe sliders made from durable materials, techno bridge adjusters and adjustable calves all made some of their first appearances on models produced by this innovative designer of motorcycle boots.
Within the current range are boots designed for summer street wear, such as the Streetburner summer sports motorcycle boots such as the Cobra Air and, all round boots such as the ST, and the Cobra. There are serious motorcycle race boots such as the Vortice and Vortice air and a huge range of waterproof boots such as the , the Courier, the ST Gore, the Adventure Gore, the B2 and the Black Rain.
There are also a huge range of ladies boots with most models having an equivalent that are designed for the female rider. Sizing in some models starts from a tiny 36 (thatís a two) so thereís bound to be something for the slight of foot.
Whatever youíre looking for in stylish and functional motorcycle footwear this half century old company will have a model to suit your needs.
