How should a motorcycle jacket fit?

You're spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting your jacket, but when it comes to size there are a number of factors to consider. While jacket fit is up to preference, and comfort is an obvious factor, there are a few other points to think about when looking for a jacket.

When considering a leather jacket, the jacket should be as tight as possible without being uncomfortable, almost like a second skin. This is so your jacket doesn't crinkle during movement, wear out quickly over time, or scuff permanently. Regardless of how it fits off the bike, you should consider how it feels at a seated position, as you won't be lifting your hands above your head during your ride! You also needn't worry about layering, as leather is a natural heat insulator anyway. Most leather jackets are measured by chest size, so keep this in mind when looking to buy.

If you're after a textile jacket, you should consider room for additional layers, especially during colder rides when you're more likely to wear a hoodie than a t-shirt under your garment, and a too snug jacket will affect it's insulation and ventilation amenities. If the textile jacket is too loose, any sharp turns or quick movements will cause the integrated padding and protectors to shift out of place, and air will be allowed through the bottom and billow up while riding.
